What is Child Abuse? It’s when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to the child.
There are many forms of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and emotional abuse.
The survey that we did shows the following common of child abuse.
- Physical Abuse – is when an older person causes any accidents physically to a child.
- Sexual Abuse – when anybody uses a child for sexual purposes or involves a child in sexual activities, for example when a child is being touched to their private parts without their concert.
- Emotional Abuse – when a child is being abused mentally and socially, or causes a severe emotional harm, it is considered emotional abuse. While a single incident may be abused, most often emotional abuse a pattern of behaviour that causes damage over time.
- Child Neglect – When a parent/guardian/caregiver does not give a child care, supervision, affection and support needed for a child health, safety and well being and it includes the following: (Physical neglect, inadequate supervision, emotional neglect, medical neglect and educational neglect)
What causes child abuse?
There is not any single fact that which causes child abuse, abuse usually occurs in families where there is a combination of risk factors. Abuse and neglect occur most often in families who are under pressure and lack support. Most abuse often than sexual abuse occurs in families to which some, or all, to mention few (Poverty, lack of education, serious, material problems, violence between family members and unemployment).
Prevention of child abuse
The goal it’s very clear – to stop this violence from happening in the first place. Safe stable, nurturing relationships and environments for all children and families can prevent abuse and help all children reach their full potential.
